Charity Dog Walk Success!

We’re delighted to announce that our St George’s Day Charity Dog Walk has helped raise £398.35 for local charity Hounds for Heroes.

Our principle chiropractor Philippa comments, ‘Coming from a military family, it has always been important for me to give back to the military community. The event was a great success, and we are now planning for next year’s adventures. It was fun for all the family, and we all enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Chichester Harbour accompanied by a slice of cake baked by Emsworth Cookery School and a bottle of refreshing locally sourced water from South Downs Water who both kindly sponsored the event.’

Through this provision, Hounds for Heroes aim to provide help and practical support leading to an enhanced quality of life. Allen Parton, founder of Hounds for Heroes, comments, ‘This money will assist us in our aims of placing assistance dogs with injured veterans and emergency service personnel, Acorn Health’s event and support really does send such a positive message to those serving Queen and Country that folk at home really do care about them. Every single penny received makes such a huge impact on and difference to our work. We have a great organisation, staffed by serving members of the armed forces, which in itself is fairly humbling, but we couldn’t do it without others help as well.’

Emsworth’s St George’s Day weekend of events was supported by The Emsworth Business Association, Havant Borough Council, Acorn Creative Ltd, South Downs Water, and Emsworth Cookery School.

Marathon 101

The South Downs Marathon is this weekend. Thousands will be running, competing, having fun and raising money for charity all at the same time.

Whether you are an athlete, pro-runner or amateur there are some simple rules to stick by to prevent injury and pain after running all that way.  The South Downs Marathon is notoriously tough, so here’s our tips to help you overcome from the challenge!

1. Water – If it’s hot outside, you’ll need to drink more than usual, which is a challenge when you’re trying to run as well.  Please focus on hydration both pre- and post-race (being well hydrated will mean you recover more quickly too!) Don’t overlook the electrolytes you’ve lost through sweating. Rather than buy expensive, sugary energy drinks, simply add a few mmol of sodium (salt) or suitable electrolyte powde to your water. Tastes gross but does the trick!

2.  Don’t forget to eat. It might be the last thing on your mind after you’ve just run a hefty race but it’s important to rep
lenish your body with lost nutrients and electrolytes after expending so much e
nergy!

  • Replenishing stores of glycogen (what gives you your energy!) in the muscles and liver
  • Protein helps aid muscle repair
  • Restores fluid and electrolytes lost in sweat
  • Supporting the immune system in removing the lactic acid that can build up after strenuous activit

3. Kinesiotape is not only helpful when you’re out running to help support your joints and muscles, but it may alsoKinesiotape Running Pain Pregnany Sport Nike Chiropractic Adidas Hampshire Emsworth Sussex Physiotherapy Osteopath aid recovery from injuries by improving blood and lymphatic flow around the injured areas.

Waterlooville Rotary Club

Acorn Health talk to the Waterloovile Rotary Club

We would like to say a huge thank you to the Waterlooville Rotary Club for inviting Acorn Health’s principle Chiropractor Philippa Oakley to speak to the group after a delicious meal prepared by the Crookhorn Golf Club.

Acorn Health Chiropractor - Waterlooville Rotary Club Rotary Club - Philippa McKernan - Acorn Health 2015

We started with some myth busters, and put a few back pain myths to bed, then ‘Señor Spine’ came out to show off his ribs and spinal sections. The group were very interested in learning more about acute and recurring injuries and how to prevent or ‘help yourself’ before your chiropractic appointment. If you want to learn more about this yourself please take the time to read our other blogs.

Many of the Rotarians were part of an keep-fit or exercise group, which we all agreed help keep up motivation, weight management and minimise the impact of general aches and pains from key areas.

At the end of the talk, we had an inspirational vote of thanks (and won a bottle of wine in the raffle!) Overall a hugely successful event, where we hope to be invited again soon.

If your organisation or group would like Philippa to speak at your event, please contact us by emailing acorn@acornhealth.org.uk.
