The role of nutrition science can play a vital part in the search for optimal health and peak performance. Life events, stress and food intolerances can make you feel drained, leading to weight gain, hormone imbalances, digestive issues and skin problems. Sadly, the foods we eat can often contribute to these symptoms. Food intolerance testing is a simple way to identify your reactive foods, which are unique to you.
Food allergies are rare, affecting only 2% of the adult population. When we eat allergens, the body's immune system believes it is being invaded so it produces IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies to fight the foods it believes are harmful.
They do not involve your immune system, and although unpleasant and uncomfortable, are not life threatening. When we eat, our body digests proteins in our food and drink, breaking them down into small fragments. Larger fragments may pass through our body and are not broken down. Our body may react to these by attacking them using antibodies called Immunoglobulin G’s (IgG).
Current advice for those with suspected food intolerances is simply to try an "elimination diet". This trial-and-error approach can be time consuming and frustrating, and is unlikely to result in an accurate self-diagnosis. Many people with food intolerance experience more than one symptom, sometimes without even recognising the symptoms as an abnormality especially if they have been experiencing it for several years. We can be intolerant to several foods at one time. Elimination diets are restrictive and may mean you do not have a balanced diet required for optimum health.
The test requires a small blood sample, taken in clinic via a finger prick test. Your sample is then sent off to a laboratory for testing. You will receive a full hard copy report detailing your unique intolerances, in addition to a support pack, and an optional consultation with a BANT registered Nutritional Therapist. Food intolerance testing at the clinic is arranged by our chiropractor who will also receive an electronic copy of your results.
You may then choose to then undertake Health Coaching with Rhiannon Oakley, qualified Personal Performance Coach. A highly individualised coaching approach can enable you to discuss your blood test results and successfully implement any changes in lifestyle or adaptations suggested by your results.
