Frances is a specialist Independent Speech and Language Therapist for adults with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. She qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist at City University, London, in 1996 and has over 20 years experience of working with adults in both community and hospital settings.
Frances takes a practical and holistic approach, working in close partnership with the person and their family, determining individual needs through discussion and assessment. She tailors therapy to meet those needs in a way that is personal, functional and empowering, assisting the person to achieve his or her full potential.
Since qualification Frances has worked in NHS multidisciplinary teams in adult neurology, acquired brain injury, mental health, adult learning difficulties, and ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat). Frances managed the older adult mental health speech therapy service for 4 years in SW Surrey before setting up in Independent Practice in 2013. In addition Frances developed and managed the adult speech and language therapy service in Gibraltar 2000-2004 and has traveled to Ghana, on request from the Government there, to assess the need for speech and language therapy.
Frances’ wide ranging expertise means she can help those experiencing swallowing or communication difficulties due to the following:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Word finding difficulties
- Down’s Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Learning difficulties
Frances has experience in alternative and augmentative communication such as: symbols, signing, communication books, higher tech communication aids and apps.
Switch access can also be advised on for accessing communication aids.
Frances is fully trained in and uses Makaton sign language, Talking Mats and Life Stories.
What to expect at a session
You will have an initial appointment with Frances, usually lasting one hour. During this time Frances will identify your concerns regarding your communication or swallowing difficulties and what you’d like to achieve from therapy. Frances will then carry out an initial assessment of your skills, including any other relevant background information. Following this Frances will discuss results, and provide advice. Where further therapy is required individual therapy aims will be agreed with you and a plan for therapy devised.
